Hello,

How do you get topics in the portal to show the attachments directly, without requiring the user to
open the topic itself?

Thank you in advance for your help

I apologize for my bad english

Hi,

no, attachments are only displayed when opening the topic. For general usage, I don't see a lot of
sense in displaying them in the topic list (and allowing the user to download them there). Because
at first, there may be multiple posts in the topic, each having attachments (maybe in completely
different contexts). Second, users typically want to know what the attachment is about to decide
whether they want to download that. And this doesn't work well with only having a short topic
title. Third, multiple attachments are difficult to display in a useful way there.
I could imagine special cases like, for example, a forum that contains one topic for a software to
download, where each topic has exactly one post and exactly one download. You still have problem
2), though.

Since there are only a few special cases where that might make sense, it is not integrated in
Boardsolution. You might add that yourself, of course, if you like. Btw, if you really having that
download-usecase, you might want to take a look at this mod.

Edit: the mod is for 1.4x, though. I don't know if you are really still using 1.3x (if you do, you
should consider to update) or have just picked the wrong forum :)

Best regards,
Nils

Hello Nils

Thanks for the reply, I know that in most cases it will not be very useful, but in my case it would
be helpful.
It is correct that I am still running version 1.3x, I've added a lot of special modifications to
the board, and run it on a closed server for only 19 users. Therefore I do not want to update.
The reason I want to show attachments in the portal is that the portal is used to display important
messages that I have created. There will therefore be a maximum of one attachment per. post, and no
further response to the topic.

Can you describe what files I need to edit to get the portal to show attachments just like they
appear in the actual post.

Thanks for the help

Best regards.

Daniel

Ok. I guess you want to display it in the short topic list in the portal at the bottom right? Then
you need to change the modules/portal.php (the function _add_current_topics) and potentially the
template portal.htm (starting at {IF show_latest_topics}). Boardsolution has a table bs_attachments
where you can e.g. get the number of attachments for a specific topic by doing a COUNT for
thread_id = <yourTID>. You can add this then to the topics-array that is collected in the loop and
use it in the template.

Best regards,
Nils

Ah ok, then I missunderstood you. Displaying the attachments in the news like they are displayed
when viewing the topic is a bit more difficult, I guess, because there is more to do with more
dependencies. What you need to do in principle is to copy (more or less) the code from the
src/posting_utils.php (lines 368 to 420) to the modules/portal.php (somewhere around line 230). So,
you need to append the attachment-display to the text of the news that is displayed. At least, this
is one way of doing it. But just copying will probably not work. You need to check what
dependencies the code has and adapt it apropriately.

Best regards,
Nils
